Is Your Roof Ready for Summer?

Summer is the perfect time to check your roof for any wear and tear and make any simple repairs. A roof in good condition helps to regulate the heat in your home, keeping you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Problems with your roof can mean that your air conditioning unit can’t work as efficiently because of poor ventilation or poor heat reflection.

It’s not just wet or stormy weather that can damage your roof. Depending on the material your roof is made of, it may also be prone to thermal shock.  A little summer maintenance helps you avoid those issues or spot damage early. It also means you’ll be well-prepared for when the colder and wetter months arrive too.

Of course, don’t forget to do these checks safely. Wear shoes with a good grip, and have a partner to hold your ladder steady and provide assistance.  If you don’t feel able to carry out the checks safely, you could always contact your local roofing company who will be able to give your roof the all-clear or find any issues quickly for you.

If you’re comfortable checking your roof yourself then here’s what to look for:

Loose or missing tiles

Take a look for any damaged or missing tiles that will need repairing or replacing. Having these repaired or replaced as quickly as possible will help prevent any damp issues in your home caused by water leaking in.

Uneven surface or discoloration

The surface of your roof should be mostly uniform. If any areas are sagging or protruding, it might be best to get a professional to come and look at your roof. Take note of any discoloration, too, as it could indicate moss, algae, or mold that can trap moisture and damage your roof.

Guttering checks

It’s always a good idea to check that your gutters are in good working order. Regularly removing any debris that might have become lodged in the guttering will help prevent roof leaks or damage to the guttering and avoid costly repairs or replacement. This is especially important if any trees are overhanging the guttering.

Check the flashing

The flashing is the metal sealing strips around your roof that help to waterproof edges and corners. They can begin to loosen or crack over time. Small holes and cracks can be repaired relatively easily, but if they’re very damaged, they may need replacing to prevent leaks.

Check any skylights

Skylights are a great way to bring natural light into a room, but a damaged skylight can be a source of leaks. That’s why it’s important to check them occasionally for any small chips or cracks in the glass or any damage to the seal around them.
